Events, from small meetings to large scale conventions, consume energy, produce waste and create harmful emissions. Hotels and Meeting Planners alike are increasingly becoming aware of the environmental impacts and as such hosting a green meeting is becoming more and more common.
Green Key Global and The MPI Foundation Canada are pleased to announce the creation of the Green Key Meetings program, a comprehensive assessment tool for eco friendly hotels and resorts that host meetings of any size. It was co-created by planner members of Meeting Professionals International and reflects the needs of the business event industry. The assessment tool not only tells a hotel property what it has done to date, it provides a roadmap on how to improve.
Using the existing Green Key Eco-Rating Program as a benchmark, the program is a comprehensive assessment designed as a tool to provide Travel, Meeting and Conference Planners with a sense of a hotel’s level of commitment to environmental issues.
But what is a ‘green meeting’? Simply stated, a green meeting or event incorporates environmental initiatives to minimize its negative impact on the environment; from energy and water consumption, travel & transportation, food & beverage, handouts, garbage and more.
As “green” options in the meeting and conference industry expand, environmentally conscious event planners, organizers and companies are finding that going “green” not only helps save the planet and resources, but also offers a wealth of other benefits and advantages.
Based on the results of a comprehensive environmental self-assessment, hoteliers are awarded a 1-5 Green Key Meetings Rating. Meeting Planners can visit the site and see how properties perform in six conference and meetings areas:
- Core Areas (Carbon, Energy, Waste, Water, Air Quality)
- Communication (Information, Training)
- Activities (Purchasing, Auditing, Community)
- People (Health)
Green Key Meetings is about sustainable meeting operations, adding value to the bottom line through conservation and brand management, and positively influencing the supply chain and relationships.
There are currently 90 properties participating in the Green Key Meetings Program. Of those members that have completed and submitted the self-assessment, the Key Rating breakdown is as follows:
| 1 Green Key
| 2 Green Keys
| 3 Green Keys
| 4 Green Keys
| 5 Green Keys
