Sustainability Snippet: Coast Tsawwassen Inn
Green Key Global had a conversation with Emma McDonald, General Manager of Coast Tsawwassen Inn to share a snippet of the property’s sustainability story.
This beautiful property, located in Delta, BC is committed to adopting eco-friendly practices. As travellers are becoming more eco-conscious, Coast Tsawwassen Inn recognizes how imperative it is for hotels to demonstrate their sustainability practices to attract and retain guests. Aside from the positive impact on the planet, Coast Tsawwassen Inn has seen money savings from their energy conservation efforts, which is helpful given the increasingly high cost of running a hotel. The hotel proudly takes part in the Coast Hotel brand’s Refreshingly Green initiative which involves a comprehensive recycling program, refillable amenities, use of biodegradable cleaning supplies, and more. At Coast Tsawwassen Inn, they prioritize sourcing locally produced products as often as possible and have significantly reduced the amount of takeout packaging and provide guests with the option of using China instead of a paper cup and plastic lid.
They also proudly boast a timeline of green initiatives on the property and continue to make improvements:
- 2008: Installed solar panels on the roof to heat hot water which resulted in significant reduction in gas consumption, cost saving and environmental benefit
- 2015: Renovated the ballroom and meeting rooms, installing all LED lights with timers that automatically turn off when room is vacant, and upgraded public washrooms with low flow taps that have sensors to conserve water
- 2021: Completed an extensive renovation of the whole hotel, including guest rooms. All guest rooms now have low flow toilets, faucets, and showers, as well as key card activated power switches which allows all power in the room to automatically turn off 5 mins after the guest leaves the room.
Through Green Key Global’s assessment process, Coast Tsawwassen Inn was able to gain insight on their current environmental practices and identify areas of improvement so they can plan and implement additional measures in the future.
From a marketing standpoint, Green Key Global enables Tsawwassen Inn to communicate their commitment to their environment to their guests which enhances their business by demonstrating their active efforts to reduce carbon footprint.
